If I buy an american Ipod Touch can i use australian apps?

I am looking into buying an Ipod Touch 16GB from the US Apple Store .. and before i buy it i was wondering if i could get australian Apps from the the australian app store? or would i have to result to buying a ridicously overpriced Australian Ipod Touch?
