Why did slave owners denounce slavery, yet engage in it?

Everyone I read about in history, from George Washington to Robert E. Lee, supposedly denounced the institution of slavery. However, they kept slaves working for them on their estates. It does not seem logical to criticize something and engage in it at the same time. Can anyone explain this?
